 STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities contingent upon maintaining a C average in subjects and a C in conduct and effort.

Student Government

Student government is organized and developed so that it not only provides services to the school, Church, and community, but also develops responsibility in the students and enables them to become more effective leaders in the democratic process and in a Christian society. Faculty members act as advisors to the council which consists of a Commissioner General, Assistant Commissioner General, Secretary, Treasurer, Commissioner at Large, and Commissioners of Publicity, Religious Activities, Safety, Ecology, Spirit, Assemblies and Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics. The board organizes food and toy drives for the needy, runs a recycling program, organizes pep rallies and middle school dances, and holds fund raisers to pay for assemblies and "fun days" for the student body.

Academic Decathlon

Students who show a dedication to academics are invited to participate on the Academic Decathlon team. The 10 members study their chosen curricular areas of mathematics, English, literature, art and music, social studies, religion, science and prepare for Logic and Super quizzes. The Diocese-wide competition is held in March. The Diocese champions are invited to the state competition.

Choir

Students are encouraged to join the Parish Children’s Choir. The children’s choir sings at Sunday Mass once a month, and special events throughout the year. Practices are held after school. Open to grades 3-8.

Band

Band classes are offered at an additional cost by the Mater Dei High School Band Department. Lessons are offered after school once a week. Students perform twice a year at winter and spring concerts.

Altar Servers

4th through 8th graders are invited to serve the Church as altar servers. Students are scheduled to serve at weekday and Sunday Masses.

Service Club

The Service Club offers students the opportunity to be of service to their school, Church, and community. Projects have included "Beach Clean-up Day", collection of hygiene supplies for the homeless, and helping the Knights of Columbus with fundraisers for the needy. Open to grades 6-8.

Parochial Athletic League (PAL) sports are open to both boys and girls in grades five through eight. Leagues are school sponsored and self-supporting through payment of a sports fee and fund raising efforts of the Booster Club.

Cheerleading

St. Barbara cheer program is open to boys and girls. 1st through 4th graders compete on the Jr. Varsity squad, 5th through 8th graders compete on the Varsity squad. Cheer is a self-supporting program. Parent involvement is required to help with fundraisers and to support the team. The Celtic cheerleaders are expected to be role models and as such must behave in a manner befitting a representative of St. Barbara School. They are spirit leaders at games, pep rallies and school functions and must always motivate in positive ways. As athletes, the Celtic cheerleaders compete in state and national competitions.
